fantastic soundtrack for what is arguably the best PC Engine game ever, and definitely one of the greatest cute-em-up / collect-em-up style shooters ever made.

this needs some explaining. the playstation version of viewpoint is absolutely horrible, but the first two stage themes had always been tunes i enjoyed. granted, i had never gotten past the second stage playing legitimately (i re-iterate: this game is horrible). i decided to do a gamerip, and after the frustration of not being able to extract the audio data, and setting up a little rig to line-out record the stuff (as well as digging up a working invincibility code), i found that everything past the first couple stages is entirely mediocre, barring the final stage theme.
there is no boss music to speak of (the stage loops just change slightly), and there is not even title theme music. the credits music cuts off abruptly after stating “this game is brought to you by the letter P”, and the game reboots. yes, back to the playstation logo, not even to the title screen. i have included the song cutoff and reboot sound, as i am unaware of any way to actually hear the full credits theme, and i think it’s pretty hilarious.
after playing through, i noticed something in the credits. what’s interesting about this soundtrack is that three of the stage themes (1, 2, and 6) are licensed from three different record labels and are by three fairly obscure early rave artists. these are also the three best songs on the soundtrack, so that’s certainly saying something. but really, who the fuck licenses music for use in a shooter? and only three songs? and when the game already had a perfectly good CD-audio quality soundtrack before porting it to the playstation? this entire thing is really a huge mess.
so anyways, after seeing the credits mention the licensed tracks (which are not mentioned at ALL in the manual’s version of said credits) i spent some time digging around the internet to grab high(ish) quality full versions of said tracks. bit rate varies from track to track, due to the fact that i had to dig around through various sources for the licensed tracks (Tekno Bam’s wonderful remaster was bought directly from the original artist, off of his own personal webspace), and taking into consideration that the tracks written for the game are stored in REALLY poor quality in the first place. i’m pretty sure it’s 22khz mono audio, despite being advertised on the back of the damn box as “3D sound”, in reference to the music itself.
enjoy this obscure gem of a soundtrack, or at least the three licensed tunes. because the rest is really laughably bad, and trying really hard to be “sweet dope techno”.
