Gungage (1999 / PlayStation)

a serious contender for one of the best soundtracks and games to come out of Konami (more specifically, KCET). featuring brilliant work from the now-top-of-the-world Castlevania composer Michiru Yamane and synth wizard Sota Fujimori, the duo offer up a huge variety of audio that overall feels like an aural successor to the combined work done for Castlevania Chronicles and Symphony of the Night, which i’d say is no coincidence that the game shares much of Symphony’s staff beyond just Yamane.

an absolute must-play and must-listen. the game was only localized to Europe as far as outside-of-Japan releases go, but it’s pretty much fully in English (with Scott McCulloch (RE1’s Chris Redfield, Bloody Roar’s Greg, SotN’s Richter) as the lead “narrator” voice) and requires no Japanese reading skill whatsoever. and it ain’t expensive.
